Republic of Yemen is an Arab country located in the southwest of the Arabian Peninsula in Western Asia. Its area is approximately 555,000 square kilometers, and its population is estimated at 30,411,000 according to the 2020 population projection.
Yemen is bordered to the north by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and to the east by the Sultanate of Oman. It has a southern coast on the Arabian Sea and a western coast on the Red Sea. Yemen has more than 200 islands in the Red Sea and the Arabian Sea, the largest of which are the islands of Socotra and Hanish. The Yemeni constitution stipulates that the state is democratic, recognizes political pluralism, adopts a free economic system, adheres to international conventions and treaties enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and that Islamic Sharia is the source of all legislation. Yemen is a member of the League of Arab States, the United Nations, the Non-Aligned Movement, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, and the World Trade Organization.
